EHRMCC 2018/19 - Finals in Strasbourg
14-19 April 2019: Uni Graz Team Ranked Sixth in Written Submission Round, Quarter Finals Against Oxford
In October 2018, the Uni Graz Team accepted the unique challenge called ELSA European Human Rights Moot Court Competition (EHRMCC), an endeavour which would prove to be demanding but in the end fruitful. In the seventh edition of the competition, a fictional case on the right to private life, freedom of expression and human rights online (Maya Engel v. Artemidia) had to be dealt with by the competing students in writing as well as in oral pleadings. Qualifying for the finals as 6th after the written round, April 2019 saw the Graz team going to Strasbourg to compete with the rest of the top 20 teams (out of about 100) in Europe. Moritz Deinhammer, Valerie Klein, Karina Paskar and Fabian Windhager (Team Captain) reached the elimination rounds as the first Uni Graz Team and came up against the University of Oxford, who excelled in the oral pleadings and would later be crowned winners of the whole competition, in the quarter finals.
Course lecturers ao.Univ.-Prof. Gerd Oberleitner and Mag. Gregor Fischer as well as Stud.Ass. Christina Seewald congratulate the team members on their achievements. We would like to thank the REWI Dean's Office for the opportunity to coach the team in the Faculty's own Moot Court Room which has proven to be a valuable and unique asset. We would also like to thank Vice Rector ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin Polaschek, Dean Univ.-Prof. Dr. Johannes Zollner and Vice Dean Univ.-Prof. Dr. Christoph Bezemek for supporting the Human Rights Moot Court initiative at the REWI Faculty!
ELSA Human Rights Moot Court Competition 2016/17
After having drafted the written submission for the applicant and respondent sides, the design of lines of argumentation for the oral pleadings and numerous training and rhetorics units, the team of the University of Graz performed very well in the Pre-Moot at the Vienna University of Economics. On January 17, Martin Steiner, Nina Kulundzija, Johanna Scheidt and Stefan Dobrijevic spent an exciting day together with teams from Luzern, Halle (Saale), Freiburg and the Viennese hosts and presented their case. Prof. Grabenwarter and Prof. Klein were, among others, acting as judges. The WU Vienna insisted on inviting all teams to a convival dinner afterwards, thank you very much!
Due to the high competitiveness of this year's edition of the europe-wide ELSA Human Rights Moot Court Competition, the seminar's participants could sadly not make it to the finals in Strasbourg. The UNI-ETC-team is still proud of the progress the students have made throughout the semester. Let's do it again next year!
