[...] Memory ist von Geburt an eine Außenseiterin: eine Albino, die bis zu ihrem 9. Lebensjahr in einer Township aufwuchs. Dann, so glaubt sie, wurde sie von ihren Eltern an den reichen weißen Groß-grundbesitzer Lloyd Hendricks verkauft. Er zog sie liebevoll auf und ermöglichte ihr eine erstklassige, internationale Ausbildung. Jetzt ist Hendricks tot, und Memory des Mordes an ihm angeklagt. Memorys Erinnerungen wandern hin und her zwischen der Armut ihrer Kindheit, dem Leben in den luxuriösen Country Retreats der Reichen, der Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart, der Geschichte ihres Landes und ihrer eigenen.
Die Farben des Nachtfalters erschien 2015 in Großbritannien und löste bei Schriftstellerkollegen wie Taiye Selasi oder Chigozie Obioma, aber auch bei der Presse ein großes Echo aus. So zeigte sich die Financial Times unter anderem begeistert von der Fähigkeit der Autorin, »die harte Realität mit gewinnender erzählerischer Strahlkraft zu verknüpfen«.

»Petina Gappah ist eine glänzende Erzählerin«, lobte Nobelpreisträger J.M. Coetzee bereits, als 2009 ihr Debüt erschien, ein Erzählungsband, für den sie auf Anhieb den Guardian First Book Award erhielt. Nun legt Petina Gappah ihren ersten Roman vor – die Geschichte einer jungen Frau, die zum Tode verurteilt über ihr von Gegensätzen geprägtes Leben erzählt und dabei erfährt, wie sehr Erinnerung täuschen kann.

Die Autorin
Petina Gappah, 1971 in Sambia geboren, wuchs im damaligen Rhodesien (heute Simbabwe) auf.
Sie studierte Jura an der University of Zimbabwe, an der University of Cambridge und an der Universität Graz und arbeitete anschließend viele Jahre als Juristin in Genf. 2009 erschien ihr erstes Buch, der Erzählungsband An Elegy for Easterly, für den sie mit dem Guardian First Fiction Award ausgezeichnet wurde. Die Farben des
Nachtfalters ist ihr erster Roman.Ab dem Frühjahr 2017 wird Petina Gappah als Stipendiatin des DAAD für
