Syrian Experiences of Displacement and Precarious Living in Turkey

© Michael Gaida/Pixabay

HuK-Forum 6.12.2021 at 18.00 (Online) gestaltet vom Cluster Menschenrechte, Demokratie, Diversität und Gender (MDDG)

Guest Lecture by Prof. Suzan Ilcan, University of Waterloo, Canada.

Turkey now hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees in the world, more than 3.6 million of the 12.7 million displaced by the Syrian Civil War. The presentation reflects on the experiences of people on the move who have survived the current Syrian war to confront the challenges of forced displacement. It draws on scholarly documents, migration policies, and in-depth, qualitative interviews with displaced people from Syria who have relocated to urban Turkey. Building on existing scholarship about migration, displacement, and precarity, the presentation highlights Syrians’ struggles and the ‘architecture of precarity’ shaping their lives.
