On 2 December 2020, the UNI-ETC was honored to digitally host the launch of the European Yearbook on Human Rights 2020. After the event was opened by the Dean of the Law Faculty, Prof. Christoph Bezemek, co-editor Lisa Heschl outlined the topics of the new edition of the Yearbook.
The UNI-ETC had the privilege to welcome Prof. Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, former President of the European Court of Human Rights, who gave a key-note lecture about “The European Convention on Human Rights at 70: The Dynamic of a Unique International Instrument”. He reflected on the dynamic the ECHR has developed over the years, creating its “extraordinary impetus for a protection of human rights”. Click here to watch Sicilianos' input on YouTube!
Subsequently, Prof. Wolfgang Benedek gave insights on the tools of the Council of Europe to protect Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law from Backsliding (see his open access guest editorial in the ECHR Law Review), followed up by a lively and exciting discussion with, inter alia, Yearbook co-editor Philipp Czech and the general audience. The Uni-ETC cordially congratulates on the new book and thanks everyone who helped to publish the book in these difficult times and took part at the event.
More information on the European Yearbook on Human Rights: The editions of the Yearbook have been contextualizing key developments in human rights in Europe and beyond for over 10 years, bringing together renowned authors, young researchers, and practitioners in the field of human rights. Edited jointly by representatives of the UNI-ETC, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights Vienna (BIM), the Austrian Human Rights Institute of the University of Salzburg and the Global Campus of Human Rights Venice, the Yearbook 2020 provides much-needed analyses of present human rights challenges. In light of the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 2019, and its undisputed continuing importance, a whole section of the Yearbook is dedicated to the rights of the child.
