Promoting Migration Studies in India

International migration is a dominant topic in the political debate around the world. It is a critical policy domain for governments at all levels, as well as for both sending and receiving societies and it is an increasingly relevant phenomenon for the understanding of global dynamics and interactions. Migration furthermore touches upon multiple facets of human rights. Hence, the UNI-ETC engages in research and various projects on this crucial topic, one of which drew to a close in February with a Winter School and Closing Event in Delhi/India.

The ERASMUS+ Project PROMIG (Promoting Migration Studies in Higher Education) started in 2016 and aimed at developing curricula in migration management for 6 universities in the South Caucasus region and Afghanistan, establish migration competence centres at Tbilisi State University (Georgia), Yerevan State University (Armenia) and Khazar University (Azerbaijan) and develop a regional research network.

The PROMIG Winter School on Migration brought together over sixty participants and faculty from seven different countries (Afghanistan, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Brasil, Georgia, Germany, India, Spain and Vietnam) who engaged in an intensive, interdisciplinary and participative exchange on the study of migration.

Prof. Wolfgang Benedek and Bernadette Knauder represented the UNI-ETC at the Winter School in India, together with four students of Uni Graz. Please read the student’s impressions here. (German)
