Model UPR: Apply Now!

Deadline extended until 5 September 2021!

This practical course prepares students for the participation in the Padova Model UPR (Simulation of the Universal Periodic Review - UPR of the UN Human Rights Council), which takes place annualy in late November at the Human Rights Centre of the University of Padova.

About the Event:

The Padova Model UPR is an academic simulation of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a unique United Nations (UN) mechanism which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States.
Participating teams will be assigned different roles, including States, NGOs and NHRIs, interacting within the UPR Working Group and the sessions of the Human Rights Council. During the simulation, participants will have to analyse the human rights performance of the concerned States, take part in the interactive debate, and adopt the final lists of accepted and noted recommendations. The University of Graz will, depending on students' interest, be able to register up to two teams, one representing a state (4-6 persons) and one representing an NGO (1-2 persons). Accordingly, a maximum of 8 persons will be enrolled in the course. These teams will then have to go through the application process of the Padova Model UPR. Herein, they will be supported by UNI-ETC staff.

The following criteria have to be met by students in order to be eligible for the Padova Model UPR:

  • interest and prior knowledge in human rights - preferably students of Political Sciences, International Relations, Social Sciences or Legal Studies
  • basic knowledge about/interest in the UPR process
  • good command of the English language (Level of English at least B2)

The 4th edition of the Padova model UPR will be held from 23-26 November 2021.

Application open from now until 5 September 2021, 23:59. To apply for the team representing the University of Graz, send a short CV and a letter of motivation to stephanie.grasser(at)uni-graz.at. The course is open for students from Law, Global Studies and Southeast European Studies. You will earn 2SSt/5 ECTS.
