Human Rights at Noon/Menschenrechte zu Mittag: UNI-ETC Lunch Lecture Series

The UNI-ETC proudly hosted several high-level guest researchers, who shared their most recent research in a series of lunch lectures in recent weeks. (Artikel auf Deutsch untenstehend!)

Kicking off the lecture series on 21 November, Dr. Belay Mengisite scrutinized the floriculture industry in Ethiopia and analyzed the nexus between environment protection and human rights and the challenges faced in sustainable development in Ethiopia.

On 14 January, Dr. Naif Bezwan lectured about the presidential system of present-day Turkey, where the change from the parliamentary system of government to a presidential regime took place under the repressive conditions of a public state of emergency and the associated substantial restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms.

Dr. Wondemagegn Goshu, on 20 January, analyzed peculiar challenges regarding prosecution, amnesty and reconciliation in transitions, taking the example of the current transition of Ethiopia.

On 31. January, Dr. Mihreteab Taye's lecture juxtaposed how human rights advocates contribute to the institutional change of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) and considered how litigation introduces a dynamic in which institutional change can occur from below.

All events attracted an interested audience and the inputs were followed by lively discussions.

Law from the Machine?

In ancient Greek, apò mēkhanês Theós (more well-known in Latin as "Deus ex machina") describes the way mythological figures appeared in theaters seemingly from thin air, instantly influencing the plot. Today, Artificial Intelligence might exert similar effects in legal proceedings. Students from our faculty are currently taking a deep dive into this matter in a human rights moot court competition, inter alia, in Greece - and they are doing so with great success.
