FreeAc: Webinar "Academic Writing with Generative AI Systems"

Screenshot webinar

On the 13th of November 2025, the University of Graz held an online webinar titled “Academic Writing with Generative AI” within the Erasmus+ project “Promoting Academic Freedom in Ukraine (FreeAc)”. The session was designed for students from Ukrainian partner universities to help them understand how generative AI tools influence academic writing and how to use them responsibly.

The webinar brought together participants from the project’s Ukrainian partner institutions and offered an introduction to how generative AI works, its academic potential, and its limitations. The discussion focused on ethical and institutional aspects of AI-assisted writing and on the practical challenges students face when using such tools in their learning and research.

The session was led by Franziska Gürtl, a specialist in academic writing at the University of Graz Writing Center. With her experience in supporting students and teachers in navigating AI in writing processes, she guided participants through key questions surrounding the use of AI in academic contexts. During the webinar, students reviewed examples of AI-generated texts and discussed how to use such tools responsibly. The session helped them understand the key opportunities and risks of AI-assisted writing and encouraged thoughtful, ethical use.
