FreeAC: online workshop "Communicating Instruments and Strategies for Academia"

Folie Olga

On 10 March 2026, the European Training and Research Centre for Human Rights and Democracy at the University of Graz hosted an online workshop “Communicating Instruments and Strategies for Academia” within the Erasmus+ project “Promoting Academic Freedom in Ukraine (FreeAc)”

On 10 March 2026, an online workshop “Communicating Instruments and Strategies for Academia” was held within the Erasmus+ project “Promoting Academic Freedom in Ukraine (FreeAc)” 2023-1-AT01-KA220-HED-000164930. The workshop brought together more than 30 participants from Ukrainian partner universities (Sumy State University, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the International University in Odesa) to discuss effective ways of communicating academic research to wider audiences.

The workshop was led by Olha Volynska, a journalist and storyteller with more than 15 years of experience working with international media and cultural institutions, including the Goethe-Institut, House of Europe, BBC News Ukraine, Institute for War & Peace Reporting, and Deutsche Welle Akademie. She is the author of „Wie der Krieg uns verändert” and “Art against Artillery: Ukrainische Künstler im Krieg”.

During the session, participants explored practical tools and strategies for presenting academic work in a clear and engaging way. The workshop included interactive discussions and exercises focused on how researchers can communicate their work beyond the academic community, including engaging with journalists, speaking confidently in public, and using social media to share research and expertise.

The event also provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the importance of effective science communication and to exchange experiences on how academic institutions can strengthen their outreach and public engagement.
