FreeAc Lecture Series: Ukraine and the World as the Ship of Theseus

slides

On 2 December 2025, the online guest lecture “Ukraine and the World as the Ship of Theseus: The Perfect Storm” took place at the University of Graz within the Erasmus+ project “Promoting Academic Freedom in Ukraine” (FreeAc). The event continued the series “Ukrainian Voices: Academic Freedom in a Changing World”.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Olena Kharytonova, Associate Professor at Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University, member of GREVIO of the Council of Europe and Gender Adviser to the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine.

The lecture offered a concise analysis of the foundations of the Ukrainian worldview and legal identity and showed how these elements shape Ukraine’s place in the modern geopolitical landscape. Dr. Kharytonova also reflected on the contemporary constitutional order through the lens of gender discourse and discussed the normalization of political violence, victim blaming, the Mother Russia narrative and forms of masculine dominance that influence today’s political agenda. Using the philosophical paradox of the Ship of Theseus, she illustrated how identities and political systems change over time and how societies continue to define themselves during ongoing crises.

The Ukrainian Voices series is jointly organised by the University of Graz and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. It aims to support Ukrainian scholars, promote international cooperation and protect academic freedom during wartime.
