2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action. This is an occasion to examine the potential of and obstacles to realizing social and economic human rights in times of crises and inequality. The European Training and Research Centre on Human rights and Democracy cordially invites to the panel discussion “How far have we come? The progressive realization of socio-economic human rights”.
Pádraig McAuliffe (Law School, University of Liverpool) will discuss together with Karin Lukas (Central European University; former President of the European Committee on Social Rights) and Wolfgang Benedek (University of Graz, Prof. ret.) about the realization of socio-economic rights since the adoption of the VDPA 30 years ago.
We will furthermore present the new European Yearbook on Human Rights 2023, a special issue with the title “Rethinking Human Rights” bringing together contributions by both emerging and renowned scholars to shed light on universal and individual human rights issues reflecting the complexities of the current times and showing the potential of human rights frameworks when applied and interpreted in an open way, putting equality, dignity and non-discrimination at the center.
We are happy to invite you to a reception after the event!
