Media governance has changed substantially after Russia's attack on Ukraine.
A digital Iron Curtain was put up, as social media companies withdrew or were banned in Russia and Russian state sponsored news outlets were the targets of EU sanctions and deplatforming. “Governing Information Flows During War” analyses how 29 states, including 18 EU members, have dealt with media governance questions related to the informational dimension of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
The UNI-ETC contributed to the working paper compiled in the framework of the Global Digital Human Rights Network (GDHRnet): Wolfgang Benedek and Gregor Fischer-Lessiak co-edited the working paper, Sophia Urban and Kirsten Reiterer contributed together with Gregor Fischer-Lessiak to the submission for Austria.
On 19 April 2022, the paper was introduced in a webinar with remarks from Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Eva-Maria Liimets, Former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Director for Strategic Communication at the German Federal Foreign Office Irene Maria Plank and Irish Parliament member Louise O’Reilly. The panel of co-editors presenting the main findings of the study consisted of Head of the GDHRnet Mart Susi, Matthias C. Kettemann, Birgit Schippers, Jukka Viljanen and Gregor Fischer-Lessiak.
